Chapter 41

Overview

Avery's late-night drive with Jameson creates immediate consequences when Oren catches them and paparazzi photos turn the moment into public gossip. The chapter deepens the mystery around Emily, the dead girl whose memory still affects Jameson and Grayson, and makes that mystery personal when Avery meets Emily's sister, Rebecca Laughlin.

Meanwhile, Xander confirms that he is also involved in Tobias Hawthorne's posthumous game but intends to play it his own way. By the end, Avery's search for answers shifts from abstract clues in the Red Will to a living connection to Emily inside her own school.

Summary

After Avery and Jameson finish driving on Tobias Hawthorne's hidden track, Oren arrives with a security team. Oren makes it clear that Jameson will be dealt with, returns Avery to her room, and warns that they will discuss her behavior in the morning.

Avery sleeps badly while turning over the newest clues: the names highlighted in the Red Will, the possibility that they refer to the boys' fathers, and Skye's claim that Tobias chose the grandsons' middle names. Avery also thinks about Skye's warning that Avery is no Emily, then dreams of chasing an unreachable teenage girl through endless corridors.

Before dawn, Max calls after seeing a paparazzi aerial photo of Avery and Jameson in the car. Max teases Avery about Jameson, but Avery insists that getting involved with him would worsen tensions inside Hawthorne House. Avery admits there was a girl named Emily who died, though Avery does not know how, and Max's question about whether Jameson is still hung up on Emily makes Avery remember how devastated Grayson looked when Emily's name came up.

Oren then spends more than an hour reviewing security protocols and warns that he will keep doing so until Avery takes them seriously. At school, Avery notices that Jameson is avoiding her, Avery avoids Thea, and Avery keeps wondering how Emily died. Xander approaches Avery, jokes about the paparazzi and Skye, and confirms in his roundabout way that he also received a letter from Tobias and is playing the game on his own terms.

In physics lab, Avery chooses not to sit with Thea and instead sits beside the silent red-haired girl she had seen in the archive. Xander cryptically describes the girl's story as full of love, tragedy, heartbreak, family complications, and penance. The girl proves to be an excellent but nearly wordless lab partner and finally introduces herself as Rebecca Laughlin, granddaughter of Hawthorne House staff.

When Rebecca helps Avery submit the assignment, Avery sees Rebecca's tablet wallpaper: Rebecca with another girl who shares her eyes. Rebecca says the girl was her sister and that she died. Avery realizes the sister was Emily, and Rebecca calmly says Emily would have been very interested to meet Avery.
