Chapter 55

Overview

Avery tries to steady herself after Jameson’s departure and the shooting, choosing anger and determination over fear. Rebecca’s visit shifts Avery’s focus from the immediate attack to Emily Laughlin’s role in the Hawthorne brothers’ past.

Rebecca reveals that Emily dated both Grayson and Jameson and turned their feelings into a competition, deepening the connection between the Hawthorne family’s games and its emotional damage. The chapter ends with Avery learning that Grayson said Emily died because of her heart, while Rebecca’s intended warning remains unresolved.

Summary

After Jameson leaves, Avery refuses to follow him or accept Grayson’s warning that the Hawthorne family destroys everything it touches. Hurt, scared, and angry after being shot at and kissed, Avery decides she would rather be angry than broken, then texts Max that someone tried to kill her and that she made out with Jameson.

Avery returns to the bedroom and finds Rebecca Laughlin in the doorway. Rebecca says her grandmother sent her to check on Avery, and Avery notes Rebecca’s muddy hiking boots and cargo pants, realizing Rebecca had been on the property but not with her grandparents during the shooting. Avery remains alert because the shooter could be anyone.

Rebecca awkwardly responds to the news that Avery was shot at, then invokes Emily, saying Emily would have claimed Avery was shot because Avery was wounded and deserved some melodrama. Avery notices the twin beds and asks whether Rebecca and Emily shared the room as children. Rebecca says purple was Emily’s favorite color and that Emily used to tell Rebecca it was Rebecca’s favorite, too.

Rebecca says she should warn Avery, but instead begins talking about Emily. Rebecca explains that Emily was wonderful when she wanted to be, charismatic and beloved, but not nearly as good to the Hawthorne boys. Emily did not like to choose, and Rebecca was raised to keep her sick sister happy.

Avery presses for specifics, and Rebecca reveals that Emily dated both Grayson and Jameson. The boys did not know at first, but when they found out, neither wanted to let Emily go. Emily turned their rivalry into a competition, another game.

Avery then asks how Emily died. Rebecca says Grayson told her it was Emily’s heart. After Rebecca leaves, Avery realizes Rebecca never actually explained what she meant to warn Avery about.
