Chapter 32

Overview

Grayson intrudes on Avery and Jameson's attempt to investigate Tobias Hawthorne's letter, turning the library meeting into a tense confrontation between the brothers. The discovery that Grayson received the same message as Jameson suggests Tobias's clue may be broader and more deliberate than Jameson realized.

Avery also reveals that Tobias had disinherited the Hawthorne family in an earlier will long before choosing her, shifting the mystery away from Avery as the sole cause of the family's loss. By allowing Grayson to stay, Avery changes the dynamic from a private partnership with Jameson into a competitive three-way search for answers.

Summary

Avery arrives at the library at 9:15 for her planned clue-hunting with Jameson. Jameson arrives soon after, but Grayson joins them almost immediately, dressed formally and clearly intending to supervise. Jameson resents Grayson's presence, while Avery recognizes that Grayson does not trust Jameson alone with her.

Jameson explains that he and Avery are following a hunch about Tobias Hawthorne's letter to Jameson and what it might reveal about why Tobias left the fortune to Avery. Grayson challenges the idea, and Jameson suggests the letter sounds like one last game from their grandfather. For a moment, Avery notices that both brothers seem tempted by the possibility of solving it together, but the fragile connection disappears when Grayson implies Jameson no longer knows Tobias well.

Grayson reveals that his own letter contained the same phrase: “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Jameson immediately understands that Grayson received the same message and warns Avery that Grayson could use the letter to suggest Tobias was not mentally sound when he changed the will.

Avery counters by revealing what Alisa told her: Tobias had already written an earlier will that gave the Hawthorne family even less, meaning Tobias did not disinherit the family because of Avery. Jameson is shaken and accuses Avery of lying, but Grayson confirms the truth, explaining that Tobias disinherited the family after their uncle died, before the brothers were born.

Grayson then demands to know what Jameson thinks the letter means. Jameson refuses to give away the game, but Grayson points out that he can remain in the room indefinitely and reason out their work once he sees it. Jameson leaves the decision to Avery, expecting her to exclude Grayson, but Avery allows Grayson to stay, heightening the tension between the brothers as the investigation continues.
