CHAPTER 76: THE BROKEN ROBOT

Overview

The animals try to rebuild Roz with parts from the destroyed robots, but her body is too damaged for the limbs to attach. Brightbill is devastated, while Roz remains calm and grateful that her mind and voice still work.

The chapter shifts the aftermath of the battle from victory to uncertainty, showing that Roz has survived but can no longer care for herself as before. Her request for help getting home marks a new dependence on the island community she once protected.

Summary

After RECO 1 is defeated, geese and otters gather around Roz and try to repair her. They pull arms and legs from the pile of robot parts and press them against Roz, hoping the pieces will snap into place and restore her.

The attempt fails because Roz’s body is too badly damaged. The limbs will not attach, and the animals realize that Roz cannot return to her old self through their efforts.

Brightbill apologizes to Roz, his voice trembling because he believed the plan would work. Roz responds calmly, telling Brightbill that she is fortunate she can still think and speak.

Although Roz wants to comfort her son and friends, Roz understands that the situation is serious. Looking at her mangled body, Roz admits that she needs help getting home.
