CHAPTER 45: THE DEAD ROBOTS

Overview

Roz takes Brightbill through the dead robot gravesite, where he confronts the reality that Roz is a machine and that both robots and living creatures can die. The discovery of Roz’s shutdown button makes Brightbill afraid of losing or changing his mother, deepening his emotional struggle to understand her nature. A reunion with the otters adds more unsettling details about Roz’s arrival, and the chapter ends with Roz reaching the clifftop to find two young bears waiting.

Summary

Roz and Brightbill descend the cliff to the rocky shore where the dead robots lie. The gravesite has decayed since Roz last saw it: her crate is gone, some parts have vanished, and other pieces are buried in sand, seaweed, or small sea creatures.

Brightbill studies a broken robot body and asks whether it used to look like Roz. Roz confirms that it was the same type of robot, leading Brightbill to ask whether Roz will die and whether he will die. Roz answers honestly but reassures Brightbill that he should expect a long and happy life, easing his fear for the moment.

Brightbill notices a button on the dead robot’s head, then discovers Roz has the same kind of button. Roz cannot press her own button because her hands automatically stop, so she offers to let Brightbill try. Brightbill becomes frightened that shutting Roz down might change her or prevent her from waking up, and Roz immediately backs away from the idea and comforts him.

Otters playing in the ocean distract Brightbill. He introduces himself and Roz to them, and Shelly, the largest otter, recognizes Roz from when the otters first found her in her crate. Shelly cheerfully describes Roz folded up in the box and coming to life like a sparkling monster, but the story overwhelms Brightbill and brings back his distress about robots and death.

Roz politely ends the conversation and carries Brightbill away from the robot gravesite. At the base of the cliff, Brightbill chooses to fly to the top while Roz climbs. When Roz reaches the clifftop, two young bears are waiting there.
