CHAPTER 2: THE OTTERS
Overview
A gang of sea otters discovers the wrecked robot bodies along the island’s northern shore and turns the strange debris into playthings. Their curiosity leads them to the only surviving crate, where they accidentally activate the intact robot inside.
The chapter shifts the story from shipwreck aftermath to awakening, as the surviving robot becomes conscious because of the island’s wildlife rather than human intervention.
Summary
On the island’s northern shore, the wreckage of four destroyed robots lies scattered across the rocks like a robot gravesite. Their sparkling parts catch the attention of a curious gang of sea otters playing in the shallows.
The otters cautiously investigate the strange objects. After testing a robot torso and discovering it does nothing, they become bolder, playing with robot hands, limbs, feet, and even a head found in a tide pool.
The otters then notice the one surviving crate above the wreckage. They climb onto the dented box and peer through a gash in its top, where they see an intact robot protected by packing foam.
Excited by the soft foam, the otters tear at it and accidentally press a small button on the back of the robot’s head. The crate begins to whir, the otters stop in surprise, and the robot opens her eyes.
