CHAPTER 35: THE FIRST SWIM

Overview

Brightbill joins the other goslings for his first swim, forcing Roz to confront the limits of her robot body as a mother who cannot safely enter deep water. Brightbill proves he belongs with the geese, but Rockmouth’s attack exposes a dangerous gap in Roz’s ability to protect him.

Loudwing’s rescue strengthens the flock’s role in Brightbill’s upbringing and shows that Roz must rely on the island community as well as her own devotion.

Summary

Loudwing visits Roz and Brightbill in the garden and announces that the next day is Swimming Day, when goose parents take their goslings onto the pond for the first time. Brightbill is excited, but Roz worries because water could damage her robot body and she cannot swim well enough to protect him.

At sunrise, Roz and Brightbill join the geese at the foggy beach. Roz steps into the shallows, but her Survival Instincts warn her away from deeper water. Brightbill plays with the other goslings until a wave pulls him in, and he quickly discovers that his body naturally floats and paddles.

Loudwing praises Brightbill and teaches the goslings how to steer with their feet. When the adult geese swim out, Brightbill hesitates because Roz cannot join him, but Roz encourages him to go with the flock. Brightbill struggles at first, drifting left and right, then successfully catches up to the other goslings.

As Roz watches Brightbill swim, Roz realizes that Brightbill has helped her survive by bringing her friends, shelter, and support. The peaceful morning suddenly turns dangerous when Rockmouth, the giant pike, attacks the group of geese. The adult geese rush to protect their young, but Roz remains trapped in the shallows, torn between saving Brightbill and obeying her body’s warning against deep water.

Brightbill swims desperately toward Roz, becoming an easy target for Rockmouth. Before the fish can harm him, Loudwing attacks Rockmouth, landing on him and beating him back until he retreats underwater. Loudwing escorts Brightbill safely to shore, and Roz holds her son while Loudwing declares that they have had enough swimming for the day.
