CHAPTER 75: THE LAST RIFLE

Overview

Brightbill risks his life to reactivate Roz after RECO 1 shuts her down and buries her beneath robot parts. RECO 1 nearly kills Brightbill, but the island animals use RECO 3’s recovered rifle to destroy the last hunter.

The chapter turns Roz’s apparent defeat into a collective rescue, showing that Brightbill and the other animals have learned to fight for her. With RECO 1 collapsed, the immediate threat from the retrieval robots is finally ended.

Summary

After shutting Roz down, RECO 1 moves to the next phase of his mission by collecting robot parts from the gravesite and shoreline. RECO 1 piles the parts around Roz’s inactive body until Roz looks like the dead robots surrounding her.

Brightbill realizes Roz is not dead but deactivated. Although the flock warns Brightbill that approaching RECO 1 is too dangerous, Brightbill waits for RECO 1 to limp away, then rushes into the pile and finds the control that restarts Roz.

Roz reboots and speaks, but RECO 1 returns before Roz and Brightbill can escape. RECO 1 grabs Brightbill in one hand, and Roz begs RECO 1 not to hurt her son, but RECO 1 ignores Roz and prepares to crush the goose.

At that moment, vultures circle down carrying RECO 3’s rifle and drop it on the shore. Geese and otters gather around the weapon, struggling to aim it but remembering how they saw a trigger pressed.

The animals fire the rifle. The beam melts a glowing hole through RECO 1’s chest, forcing RECO 1 to release Brightbill before the damaged robot shakes, twitches, and collapses beside Roz.
