CHAPTER 57: THE FIRE

Overview

A fire destroys the second lodge after the animals overload the fire pit, forcing Roz to rescue a trapped young hare. Roz then extinguishes the blaze using snow from a pine tree, proving again that the animals depend on Roz’s strength and quick problem-solving.

The disaster changes how the island community treats fire: the animals rebuild the lodge with safer design and greater caution. The chapter deepens the theme that survival requires both innovation and responsibility.

Summary

Strange sounds, terrified voices, an eerie glow, and smoke draw Roz to the far side of the pond. Roz finds the second lodge completely on fire while animals flee through the deep snow.

Broadfoot explains that the lodgers put too many logs in the fire pit, causing the flames to climb to the ceiling. A mother hare cries that her baby is still trapped inside, so Roz immediately enters the burning lodge.

Inside, Roz moves beneath the smoke and around the flames until Roz finds the frightened young hare in a corner. When the doorway begins to crumble, Roz shields the hare and smashes through the lodge wall, carrying the baby safely outside to the grateful mother.

With everyone safe, Roz calculates how to stop the fire. Roz launches into a nearby pine tree and shakes loose heavy snow, which pours onto the flames and smothers them until only the charred foundation remains.

The animals are frightened of another fire but even more afraid of the winter cold. They decide to rebuild with Roz, making a safer lodge with a taller ceiling, deeper fire pit, more stone, less wood, emergency water, and a new respect for fire.
