CHAPTER 38: THE NEW FRIENDSHIP
Overview
Brightbill and Chitchat’s friendship grows as the two young animals play, explore, snack, and trade stories. Chitchat’s nonstop storytelling is balanced by her willingness to listen to Brightbill, making their bond genuine.
Roz watches from nearby, protective but pleased, and experiences feelings like amusement and happiness as Brightbill gains a close companion beyond his mother.
Summary
Chitchat and Brightbill quickly deepen their new friendship by playing, exploring, and eating together around the pond, logs, and garden. Chitchat talks freely about her short but eventful life, including where she was born and how she recently built her first squirrel nest, called a drey.
As the two friends continue spending time together, Chitchat tells Brightbill about being chased by a weasel through the treetops until the weasel fell and never bothered her again. She also reacts to Brightbill eating an ant and explains that she prefers acorns, bark, tree buds, and berries from Roz and Brightbill’s garden.
Although Chitchat talks constantly, Chitchat also listens attentively whenever Brightbill speaks. Their balanced conversation shows that the friendship is real and mutual, not just one-sided chatter.
Roz stays nearby as Brightbill’s protective mother and quietly listens to the young animals. Roz feels something like amusement at their silly exchanges and something like happiness because Brightbill has found such a good friend.
