CHAPTER 68: THE RECOS
Overview
A sleek airship carrying three larger, shinier robots called RECOs arrives on the island and surveys evidence of Roz's unusual life there. Their landing marks the first direct intrusion of the robot world since Roz became part of the island community.
Roz emerges from the forest transformed by her environment, visibly worn, repaired, and overgrown. By introducing herself to the RECOs, Roz faces the machines that may threaten the life and family she has built.
Summary
An airship approaches the island from the south, appearing like a huge migratory bird. It is a sleek white triangular craft with a dark front window, where three robots look out. These robots resemble Roz but are larger, bulkier, and shinier, with the label RECO and individual unit numbers etched on their torsos.
The RECOs circle low over the island and observe signs of Roz's life there: a smoking hill of ash, strange wooden domes, and four dead robots scattered along the shore. The airship pauses above the robot gravesite before moving inland.
The ship lands in a meadow at the foot of the mountain. Its engines blast the ground, bending trees and ripping grass before shutting down and leaving the meadow quiet.
The door opens, and RECO 1, RECO 2, and RECO 3 step out. They notice a shadowy figure at the forest edge and form a solid, gleaming line as the figure begins to approach.
The figure emerges as Roz, now dusty and dirty, with butterflies near flowers growing from her body and a wooden foot. Roz calmly introduces herself to the RECOs, beginning a confrontation between her wild island life and the outside robotic world.
