CHAPTER 44: THE RUNAWAY

Overview

After Brightbill flies away in anger, Roz follows her worry and tracks him to the robot gravesite. Brightbill admits that Brightbill wants to understand what Roz is but is afraid to face the evidence alone.

The chapter shifts the conflict from anger to shared discovery, as Roz and Brightbill choose to confront the mystery of Roz’s identity together. Their bond strengthens because Brightbill asks for Roz’s help rather than rejecting Roz.

Summary

Loudwing tries to reassure Roz that Brightbill will be fine, explaining that adolescent goslings can be moody and sometimes need time alone. Roz does not fully understand this stage of growing up, but she accepts Loudwing’s explanation while still becoming deeply worried.

Because Brightbill has never run away before, Roz begins imagining dangers that could befall him, including storms, injury, and predators. Roz concludes that Brightbill most likely went to the robot gravesite, the place connected to his questions about what Roz is.

Roz races north across the island, moving quickly over rocks, under branches, and through meadows until Roz reaches the sea cliffs above the gravesite. There Roz finds Brightbill perched on the edge, looking down at the scattered robot parts, with tears in his eyes.

Brightbill apologizes and tells Roz not to be angry. Roz says Roz is not angry but was frightened for Brightbill’s safety. Brightbill explains that Brightbill needs to understand what Roz is and thinks seeing the other robots may help, but Brightbill became nervous and wants Roz to go with him.

Roz agrees that seeing the robot remains may help Brightbill understand. Instead of avoiding the painful mystery, Roz chooses to accompany Brightbill down to the gravesite, and mother and son prepare to face it together.
