CHAPTER 6: THE CLIMB
Overview
Roz struggles up the sea cliffs, taking more damage as she searches for safer ground. After observing a crab’s climbing technique, she adapts and learns how to scale the rocks.
Her successful climb marks an important shift from helpless arrival to active survival, showing Roz’s ability to observe, imitate, and adjust to the island environment.
Summary
Roz begins climbing the sea cliffs to reach safer ground above the shore, but the climb is difficult. Her body takes more damage, including a new dent on her rear and a long scrape down her side.
During the climb, a crab emerges from beneath driftwood and raises his claws defensively. Roz is not frightened and politely introduces herself, causing the crab to cautiously back away.
Roz notices that the crab moves easily over the rocks because of his wide stance and grippy feet. She copies his technique by spreading her arms, gripping the cliffside, and using cracks and ledges for support.
Although Roz struggles at first, crumbling rock and uncertain footholds do not stop her. She gradually improves, climbs past startled seagulls, nests, ledges, and small trees, and finally reaches the soft soil at the top of the island.
