CHAPTER 24: THE ACCIDENT
Overview
Roz witnesses the many ways animals come into the world, but a sudden storm turns her exploration into disaster. After a cliffside stone gives way under her weight, Roz falls and unintentionally destroys a goose nest, killing two geese and their unhatched goslings.
The accident forces Roz to recognize that her actions can harm living creatures, deepening her awareness of responsibility and changing her relationship to the island’s fragile life.
Summary
In spring, Roz observes how island animals are born and raised. Birds protect eggs until chicks hatch, deer give birth to fawns that quickly run, and newborns experience very different beginnings: some are welcomed by families, while others must survive alone.
While climbing down a forest cliff during a sudden spring downpour, Roz grips a wet stone block. The block cannot support the heavy robot, so it cracks apart and sends Roz falling into the treetops below.
Roz crashes through branches until she catches one with an arm and hangs above the forest floor as rocks tumble past. After the dust settles, Roz climbs down and finds the ground covered with broken stone, splintered wood, and crushed shrubs.
Among the debris, Roz discovers a destroyed goose nest with two dead geese and four smashed eggs. Roz understands that the falling rocks and wreckage caused by her accident have killed an entire goose family, marking a grave consequence of her presence on the island.
