CHAPTER 67: THE SUNRISE
Overview
After the bonfire, Roz and Brightbill share a quiet sunrise from the mountain peak, reflecting on how far Roz has come from loneliness to belonging. Their happiness confirms the strength of their bond and Roz’s place within the island community.
The calm is interrupted when Brightbill spots an airship approaching from the south, signaling that the outside human world is about to intrude on their island life.
Summary
At dawn after the bonfire party, the fire has burned down to ash and all the animals have returned home. Roz and Brightbill remain alone in the meadow, resting together in the grass while morning light appears on the horizon.
Roz suggests a walk, and the robot and the goose travel up to their favorite place on the grassy ridge. Instead of stopping there, they continue along the ridge to the mountain and climb to the craggy peak in time to watch the sunrise.
As the sun warms Roz, she remembers the first time she climbed to that spot. Back then, Roz looked over the island and believed she would always be alone, but her life with Brightbill and the island animals has proved that fear wrong.
Brightbill asks whether Roz is happy, and Roz answers that she is. Brightbill says he is happy too, enjoying the wind, sun, and chill in the air as everything feels right.
The peaceful moment changes when Brightbill hears a distant buzzing. Looking south, Brightbill recognizes an airship approaching the island and tells Roz it is flying their way.
Who Appears
- RozRobot mother who reflects on past loneliness and recognizes her happiness with Brightbill.
- BrightbillRoz’s goose son who shares the sunrise and spots the approaching airship.
