CHAPTER 14: THE BEARS
Overview
Roz’s search for shelter turns dangerous when she accidentally wakes two bears and triggers a chase. The attack reveals both Roz’s vulnerability in the wild and a crucial limit in her programming: she cannot use violence even to save herself.
The chapter ends on a sudden cliffhanger when the bears close in for the kill and Roz vanishes, shifting the story from survival learning to immediate peril and mystery.
Summary
Roz enters the cave seeking shelter, but immediately retreats after accidentally waking two young bears, a brother and sister, from their morning nap. Roz asks the bears to stay away, but the sight of a strange sparkling creature running from them triggers the bears’ instinct to chase.
Roz tries to escape across the mountainside by leaping over rocks, weaving through trees, and stomping at full speed. Because Roz is still inexperienced in the wilderness, she trips over an unseen tree root and crashes onto a rotten log, leaving pieces of soft wood stuck to her side.
As the bears charge, Roz experiences something like fear because her programming tells her to protect herself and stay alive. The bears slam Roz into a tree, claw at her body, bite her arms, and ram her chest.
Roz could have frightened the bears away by striking them, but her programming prevents violence, leaving her unable to fight back. As the bears prepare to kill Roz, she suddenly vanishes.
