CHAPTER 13: THE AFTERMATH

Overview

After the storm, Roz descends through a flooded and damaged island and sees how well the animals survived by anticipating danger and finding shelter. The comparison makes Roz’s own vulnerability clearer, as her body is now battered by the wilderness.

When Roz finds a cave, she hopes it will provide safety, but her failure to consider what might be inside leaves her exposed to a new possible threat.

Summary

At daybreak, the storm has passed, but the island is saturated with runoff, flooded streams, and slippery rocks. Roz begins working her way downhill, repeatedly clanging as she slips on the wet terrain.

As Roz descends, Roz scans the storm’s aftermath. Mud and debris have piled below the cliffs, the central river has overflowed into fields and forests, and some trees are uprooted or partly submerged, with fish moving through branches that usually hold birds.

Despite the destruction, the island’s animals appear to have survived well. Lowland creatures had somehow sensed the storm coming and moved to higher ground, while deer wade through flooded fields, beavers gather fallen branches, and geese settle into a watery forest.

Roz recognizes a clear contrast: the animals are skilled survivors, while Roz is not. After cleaning mud and grit from her body, Roz sees that the wilderness has left her increasingly dented and scratched, making her look far different from the perfect robot who arrived a week earlier.

Feeling something like relief, Roz spots a quiet cave in the mountainside and treats it as a possible safe place. Roz stomps toward the cave without considering what may already be inside.
