CHAPTER 65: THE INVITATION
Overview
Roz turns the island’s shared survival and Brightbill’s return into a reason for community celebration. By inviting every animal to a new “Party Truce,” Roz strengthens her role as a unifying figure on the island.
Mr. Beaver’s concern about the moonless night creates suspense, but Roz’s promise that it will not be dark hints at a major surprise to come.
Summary
At the next Dawn Truce, Roz arrives before everyone else because Roz has an announcement to make. Roz waits in the Great Meadow while the sky brightens and the island animals gather.
Once the animals are assembled, Roz reminds everyone that they survived a terrible winter, that new young animals are being born, and that Brightbill has returned to the island with his flock. Because there is so much to celebrate, Roz proposes a second truce at dusk: an Evening Truce, or “Party Truce.”
The animals respond with excitement as Roz invites everyone to the celebration. Roz says she will prepare everything and hints that she has planned a large surprise.
Mr. Beaver raises a practical concern: the evening will be moonless, making it too dark for some animals to see. Roz confidently replies that although there will be no moon, the night will not be dark. Roz then leaves to prepare for the party, promising to meet everyone again at dusk.
