RECO 1 investigates the Great Meadow, where he finds evidence of the animals' bonfire and Roz's presence but cannot understand what happened there. As RECO 1 moves into the forest, he loses contact with RECO 3 and then RECO 2, realizes both partners have been destroyed, and continues the mission alone.

RECO 1 reaches a beaver pond and finds signs of animals inside a wooden dome, but Roz is not there. When rain begins, RECO 1 detects something unusual in the canopy and spots Roz descending through the trees. Roz flees silently through the underbrush, but RECO 1 tracks her fading electronic signal and gives chase.

The island animals try to slow RECO 1 with traps. Beavers topple trees onto him, groundhogs lure him into a pit, and other animals attack with flaming pinecones, vines, and rocks. These defenses damage and scar RECO 1, leaving him limping and rattling, but none of them stop his pursuit.

Roz runs across the island for hours, trying every method of escape while animals assist her. RECO 1 continues tracking her, and Roz's mechanical body survives the strain, but her wooden foot cannot. Near the sea cliffs, the foot splinters apart, giving RECO 1 a fresh sign that Roz is weakened.

RECO 1 follows the trail to the clifftop and scans the shore below, where geese, otters, driftwood, seaweed, and old robot parts cover the robot gravesite. Using a detachable hand and cable, RECO 1 lowers himself down the cliff and follows Roz's faint electronic signal to a clump of seaweed. As RECO 1 searches for the source, the seaweed reaches up and grabs his rifle.
