CHAPTER 69: THE DEFECTIVE ROBOT

Overview

The RECOs reveal that Roz is considered TechLab Industries property and must be returned to the factory, refurbished, and reassigned to a work site. Roz’s questions and refusal to leave mark her as defective, causing the RECOs to begin deactivation.

Brightbill and the island animals intervene, showing how deeply Roz has become part of the wild community. The conflict shifts from tense negotiation to open resistance as Brightbill’s flock attacks the RECOs and gives Roz a chance to escape.

Summary

RECO 1 addresses Roz as ROZZUM unit 7134 and says the RECOs have come to retrieve all ROZZUM units. Roz tells them the other four robots on the island are dead, and RECO 1 confirms the RECOs have already found their remains and will collect them later.

The RECOs order Roz to come to the airship, but Roz refuses to move without answers. After repeatedly telling Roz not to ask questions, RECO 1 explains that a cargo ship carrying five hundred ROZZUM units sank in a hurricane. Most have been recovered from the ocean floor, and the RECOs have found the last five on the island.

RECO 1 says Roz belongs to TechLab Industries and will be returned to the factory, refurbished by the Makers, sold to a work site, and kept there indefinitely. Roz insists that she lives on the island, but RECO 1 calls that incorrect and warns that further resistance will prove defectiveness and lead to deactivation.

Roz continues asking who the Makers are, what her purpose is, and why questions are forbidden. RECO 1 declares Roz defective and orders deactivation. The three RECOs advance in unison, ready to restrain Roz and shut her down.

Brightbill suddenly flies into the meadow, shouting for the robots to stay away from his mother. Roz warns Brightbill in the language of the animals that the robots are dangerous and want to take Roz away. Their exchange confuses the RECOs, who cannot understand animal speech.

Noise rises from the forest as the island animals realize Roz is in danger. Brightbill’s flock dives onto the RECOs, flapping, pecking, and covering their faces to blind and distract them. With the RECOs temporarily blocked, Brightbill tells Roz to run.
