CHAPTER 17: THE CAMOUFLAGED INSECT
Overview
Roz, battered and filthy after her fall, discovers a camouflaged stick insect among the debris. By observing how the insect survives through stillness and disguise, Roz learns a practical lesson that may help the robot adapt to the island’s dangers.
Summary
After falling from the pine tree, Roz lies beneath broken branches, pinecones, and needles. The robot is still covered in sticky resin and bird droppings, and Roz prepares to clean herself.
Before Roz gets up, she notices what looks like a twig moving across a broken branch. Roz gently picks it up and realizes it is a stick insect, perfectly shaped and colored like a real twig.
Roz greets the insect and studies his camouflage. The stick insect stays completely silent and motionless, and Roz sits just as still while the two stare at each other.
Roz places the insect back where she found him and thanks him for the lesson. Seeing how camouflage helps the insect survive gives Roz the idea that camouflage might help the robot survive on the island too.
