CHAPTER 27: THE GOSLING
Overview
The surviving goose egg hatches, and the gosling immediately imprints on Roz, calling her “Mama” despite Roz’s denial. His hunger forces Roz into a new caregiving role, pushing her to seek help from grown geese and deepening her connection to island life.
Summary
The goose egg Roz has been protecting begins to hatch. A tiny gosling breaks through the shell and emerges into the nest, opening his eyes to see Roz as the first figure in his world.
The gosling immediately calls Roz “Mama,” but Roz repeatedly says she is not his mother. When the gosling cries for food, Roz understands that the hatchling is hungry but too young to explain what he needs.
Trying to care for him, Roz uses her friendliest voice and asks what he wants to eat. Realizing she needs help from an adult goose, Roz lifts the nest with the gosling inside, sets it on her shoulder, and walks through the forest in search of geese.
