CHAPTER 29: THE BEAVERS
Overview
Roz approaches the beavers with a practical gift of wood, hoping to win their help in building a home for herself and Brightbill. Though Mr. Beaver initially distrusts Roz as a monster, Mrs. Beaver and Paddler respond more openly, especially after learning Roz has adopted the orphaned gosling.
The meeting turns Roz's need for shelter into a bargain: she must bring the beavers more trees before Mr. Beaver will help. This chapter advances Roz's role as Brightbill's mother by showing her actively seeking security and community support.
Summary
Roz and Brightbill walk around the beaver pond, where the beavers maintain a dam that has turned a narrow stream into a broad home for many animals. Seeing the many chewed stumps, Roz realizes the beavers constantly need wood and decides to offer help.
Roz chops down a tree with her flattened hand and carries it along the dam with Brightbill on her shoulder. The beavers stare in alarm until Mr. Beaver orders Roz to stop. Roz introduces herself and Brightbill, explains that she is not dangerous, and offers the tree as a gift for their dam.
Mr. Beaver refuses because he distrusts Roz, but Mrs. Beaver interrupts and points out that her husband is being stubborn and rude. Mrs. Beaver accepts the birch, and Roz clarifies that she is not a monster but a robot before tossing the tree into the water.
When Brightbill peeps from hunger, Roz feeds him grass. Paddler, the Beavers' son, asks whether the gosling thinks Roz is his mother. Roz explains that Brightbill's real mother is dead and that Roz has adopted him, which moves Paddler and softens Mr. Beaver slightly.
Roz then states her true purpose: she and Brightbill need a home, and Loudwing told her the beavers could help. Mr. Beaver complains about owing Loudwing favors, but after Mrs. Beaver's glare, the beaver family holds a meeting inside the lodge. Mr. Beaver finally agrees that if Roz brings four more healthy trees, he may have time to help build a home for Roz and Brightbill.
