CHAPTER 31: THE FIRST NIGHT
Overview
Roz and Brightbill spend their first night in the Nest, turning the newly built lodge into a true home. Brightbill’s need to be held shows his trust in Roz and deepens their bond as mother and son.
The chapter quietly emphasizes that Roz’s mechanical body does not prevent Brightbill from feeling warmth, safety, and love.
Summary
On Roz and Brightbill’s first night in the Nest, the stars shine outside and a fire burns in the fire pit. Roz explains that the lodge will be their home from now on and sets Brightbill down so he can explore.
Brightbill enjoys the new lodge because it is warm, peaceful, and close to the forest and pond. He waddles through the space, peeping and investigating every corner until bedtime.
Roz tries to settle Brightbill first on a soft moss cushion and then in his woven nest, but Brightbill refuses both. Instead, Brightbill asks Roz to sit and hold him.
Roz obeys, and although Roz’s body is hard and mechanical, Brightbill feels safe and loved in Roz’s strong arms. Brightbill falls asleep there and spends the entire night resting quietly against his robot mother.
