CHAPTER 80: THE SKY
Overview
As Roz is carried away from the island, Roz reflects on the extraordinary transformation from stranded machine to wild robot, mother, and member of an animal community. Roz’s memories of the island and love for Brightbill turn the departure into a promise rather than an ending.
The chapter closes the story by giving Roz a new goal: survive, be repaired, escape, and return home. This shifts the ending from loss to determined hope.
Summary
Roz rides away from the island in the airship, broken, alone, and unsure what future waits for her. From the sky, Roz looks back on the island, the only home she has ever known.
The narration reflects on how much Roz has changed. The RECOs may have considered Roz defective, or Roz may simply have learned, adapted, and changed beyond anyone’s expectations.
Roz remembers her life on the island in vivid detail: the crate, the shore, the sea, the trees, the mountain, the lodge, and the animals. These memories make Roz wonder whether Roz will ever experience that wild life again.
Roz’s thoughts turn especially to Brightbill. Roz recognizes Brightbill not merely as a goose, but as her son; Roz saved Brightbill from death, and Brightbill gave Roz a reason to live well.
Because Roz wants to keep living and return to the family and friends she loves, Roz begins forming a plan. Roz intends to get repaired, escape whatever new life awaits, and find her way back home.
