CHAPTER 40: THE SHIP
Overview
While practicing flight on the grassy ridge, Brightbill and Roz spot their first ship far out at sea. Roz can name the object but cannot explain who is aboard or where it is headed, leaving both mother and gosling with unanswered questions about the wider world beyond the island.
Summary
Brightbill becomes intensely enthusiastic about flying, and the grassy western ridge remains his favorite place to practice. Roz and Brightbill spend afternoons there together as Roz helps Brightbill refine his flying skills.
During one afternoon on the ridge, Brightbill notices something strange far out at sea and asks Roz what it is. Roz identifies the object as a ship and explains that it is a large vessel used for ocean transport, though Roz cannot say who uses it.
Roz and Brightbill watch the ship move across the distant horizon until it disappears to the south. The sight raises new questions for both of them about where the ship came from, where it is going, and who might be aboard, but neither has answers.
