CHAPTER 37: THE SQUIRREL
Overview
Brightbill meets Chitchat, a young squirrel new to the area, after noticing Chitchat in the garden. Chitchat's nervous, nonstop chatter is met with Brightbill's patience and kindness, leading Brightbill to offer friendship.
The encounter shows Brightbill becoming more confident and socially capable as Brightbill builds relationships within the island community.
Summary
A small squirrel named Chitchat scurries through the garden near the Nest. Brightbill has never seen Chitchat before, so Brightbill watches from inside before deciding to go outside and introduce himself.
Chitchat freezes when Brightbill greets her, then begins talking rapidly. Chitchat explains that Chitchat is new nearby, notices the strange round home and the smoke that sometimes comes from it, and has seen Brightbill walking with Roz.
Brightbill listens patiently while Chitchat nervously rambles. When Chitchat worries that she is talking too much, Brightbill kindly reassures Chitchat that Brightbill likes her and wants to be friends.
Brightbill's warmth leaves Chitchat happily speechless. The chapter shows Brightbill growing socially independent and making a friend beyond Roz's care.
