CHAPTER 16: THE PINE TREE
Overview
Roz’s disappearance is revealed to be an escape into a pine tree, where the robot briefly finds safety after the bear attack. However, the island continues to challenge Roz in unexpected ways: resin, an angry nesting robin, and a broken branch leave Roz dirty, damaged, and fallen back to the forest floor.
The chapter reinforces that Roz’s mechanical strength does not make the wilderness easy for her; even small animals and ordinary natural hazards can overwhelm the robot while Roz is still learning how the island works.
Summary
After escaping the bears by remaining in a pine tree, Roz stays on the branch long after the danger has passed. Roz enjoys the quiet and inspects the damage from the bear attack, including bite marks, claw marks, and dirt.
Because Roz is dirty again, Roz begins cleaning herself. While sitting in the pine tree, Roz gets sticky resin on one arm, and her attempts to scrub it away only spread the resin across her fingers, arms, legs, and torso.
A robin then flies into the tree and screeches at Roz because the robot is too close to the robin’s newly built nest above Roz’s head. Roz cannot understand the robin’s warning, and the bird shows its seriousness by splattering droppings across Roz’s face.
To get away from the angry robin, Roz scoots farther out along the branch. The branch cannot support Roz’s weight, snaps, and sends Roz crashing hard to the forest floor beneath a shower of broken branches, pinecones, and needles. After one more splat, the forest grows quiet again.
