CHAPTER 1: THE OCEAN

Overview

A hurricane sinks a cargo ship carrying hundreds of robots, leaving only a handful of crates adrift. When the crates reach a wild island, four robots are destroyed on the rocks, but the final crate lands safely, preserving the robot inside.

The chapter establishes the robot’s accidental arrival in a harsh natural world, setting up a survival story shaped by chance, isolation, and the collision between technology and wilderness.

Summary

A hurricane rages over the ocean at night, battering a cargo ship until it sinks to the ocean floor. The wreck leaves hundreds of crates floating on the surface, but the storm continues to toss them through the waves.

As the hurricane churns, most of the crates sink one by one. By morning, the storm has passed, leaving clear skies, calm water, and only five crates drifting on an ocean current.

After days at sea, the five crates approach a wild, rocky island. The first crate is hurled against the shore and bursts apart, revealing that each crate contains a brand-new robot; the robot inside the first crate is destroyed.

The next three crates meet the same fate, smashing on the rocks and scattering robot parts across ledges, tide pools, and waves. The final crate follows the same path but is cushioned by the wreckage of the others, thrown onto a high shelf of rock, and left cracked and crumpled while the robot inside remains safe.
