CHAPTER 56: THE NEW LODGES

Overview

Roz expands the safe lodge idea across the island, beginning with a larger shelter for Broadfoot and the forest animals. By organizing the animals to help gather materials and by teaching them how to maintain fire safely, Roz turns emergency survival into a cooperative island-wide effort.

The new lodges change Roz’s role from solitary caretaker to trusted protector of many species. The glowing shelters and peaceful truce deepen the animals’ bond with Roz during the harsh winter.

Summary

Roz realizes that the first warm lodge is not enough for the island’s animals. Broadfoot the bull moose needs a larger shelter because, despite his size and thick fur, the deep cold is affecting him too.

To save time, Roz tests the frozen pond by dropping a heavy rock onto the ice. When the ice holds, Roz crosses to the forest on the far side, where Broadfoot leads the robot to a clearing chosen for the second lodge.

Roz lights a fire, which draws freezing animals from the shadows. Roz reassures the animals but explains that Roz needs their help, so the animals gather stones, branches, and frozen mud while Roz uses the materials and robot building skill to construct the shelter quickly.

The animals accept Roz’s truce and enter the warm wooden dome. Roz teaches them that fire will keep them alive if they maintain it carefully, but warns that fire can also become deadly.

As more snow falls, Roz continues building. Roz crosses into the Great Meadow, works through harsh winds and snowdrifts, and builds a third lodge, then a fourth, then a fifth. Soon warm lodges glow across the island, giving animals places to gather, laugh, share stories, and praise Roz as their friend.
