CHAPTER 78: THE FAREWELL

Overview

Roz and the animals remove every piece of the destroyed RECOs and load the remains onto the airship, ensuring the island is cleared of evidence and danger. The whole animal community gathers to say goodbye, showing how fully Roz has become part of the island.

Brightbill and Roz share an emotional farewell as Roz explains that leaving is the only way to seek answers and protect the island from more attacks. The chapter closes with Roz departing her home, but promising to try to return.

Summary

Roz prepares to leave the island in the captured airship and asks the animals to bring every robot part and rifle aboard. Roz wants every trace of the RECOs removed so the machines will not return to the island because of anything left behind.

The animals search the entire island and recover the destroyed robots piece by piece. They load smashed heads, broken rifles, twisted tubes, heavy bodies, and even tiny scraps into the ship until the island has been cleared.

As a light mist falls, the animals heave the badly damaged Roz through the airship doorway. Every kind of island creature gathers outside to give Roz a proper farewell, and Roz calls out goodbye to the wild animals.

The animals answer with a growing chorus of roars, screeches, howls, chirps, and grunts. Their farewell shakes Roz, rattles the ship, and carries across the island before fading into silence.

Brightbill flies to Roz's shoulder for a final goodbye. Roz explains that more RECOs may be coming and that Roz needs answers from the Makers; Brightbill asks if Brightbill will ever see Roz again. Roz promises to do everything possible to return, and mother and son exchange love before Brightbill rejoins the flock and the airship door closes.
