CHAPTER 41: THE SUMMER

Overview

Summer becomes a season of exploration, play, and quiet family life for Roz, Brightbill, and Chitchat. The chapter shows how the three have settled into daily rhythms, balancing island dangers with curiosity and companionship.

Roz’s conversations about the sky reveal both her knowledge and her limits, reinforcing that the robot is still learning alongside the animals she cares for. Her bond with Brightbill continues to deepen through ordinary moments of safety, storytelling, and rest.

Summary

During the summer, Roz, Brightbill, and Chitchat spend clear days exploring the island together. They visit the sandy southern point, watch rainbows near the waterfall, climb high trees, and meet both friendly and unfriendly creatures. Bears remain the only serious danger.

When the friends encounter a bear fishing in the river, Roz quietly tells Brightbill and Chitchat to follow their safety routine. Brightbill flies away, Chitchat escapes through the treetops, and Roz camouflages herself in the landscape. Afterward, the three reunite at the Nest and tell their neighbors about the danger.

On rainy days, the friends stay inside the Nest. Roz asks Brightbill and Chitchat about experiences she cannot share, such as dreaming, flying, and eating. The youngsters soon turn their energy into a game of kicking acorns, and Roz joins their laughter when acorns clang against her metal body.

On clear evenings, Roz, Brightbill, and Chitchat watch fireflies by the pond and look up at the night sky. Chitchat asks questions about the moon, stars, planets, outer space, and the universe, but Roz’s knowledge has limits. The vast sky reminds readers that Roz, despite being a robot, does not understand everything.

On rainy evenings, Roz and Brightbill curl up together while rain taps on the Nest. Roz tells stories from her life on the island, but the rain makes Brightbill sleepy, and he falls asleep before Roz can finish.
