Production Log – Entry 22
Overview
Pip escalates the investigation by staking out the station car park alone, hoping to locate Howie Bowers rather than simply call him. The chapter shows Pip becoming more secretive and comfortable with lying as the search for evidence pushes Pip into riskier methods. Howie becomes the next key target because Pip believes leverage, not direct questioning, is the only way to uncover what he knows about Andie.
Summary
Pip spends four hours parked at the far end of the station car park, watching for anyone connected to Andie Bell’s drug dealing. Pip checks for cameras, sees several waves of commuters arrive from London Marylebone, and narrowly avoids being noticed by Pip’s father.
Pip does not identify anyone who looks like a drug buyer or seller, though Pip admits that Andie’s involvement in drugs has made such judgments unreliable. Pip reflects that, although Stephen gave Pip Howie Bowers’ number, simply calling Howie is unlikely to work because Howie would not confess to drug dealing or discuss Andie with a stranger.
Ravi thinks Pip and Ravi should phone Howie, but Pip decides they need leverage before approaching him. Since Ravi has work, Pip plans to return to the station alone the next evening and lie to Pip’s parents by saying Pip is doing English coursework at Cara’s house.
The entry ends with Pip acknowledging that lying is becoming easier and reaffirming the immediate goal: find Howie Bowers and obtain leverage that could make him talk about Andie.
