Overview
Pip expands her investigation beyond Sal by trying to access police records and scrutinizing Jason Bell’s behavior after Andie’s disappearance. Old press footage makes Jason seem controlling and possibly suspicious, especially when he refers to Andie in the past tense before her death was known.
This chapter shifts the inquiry toward Andie’s family and establishes Jason Bell as Pip’s first formal person of interest, widening the case beyond the official story that Sal acted alone.
Summary
Pip researches whether she can request Sal Singh’s police interview from Thames Valley Police under the Freedom of Information Act. She notes possible exemptions, such as ongoing investigations or privacy protections, but reasons that Sal’s death may remove some barriers and considers requesting broader police records from the Andie Bell investigation.
Pip then turns back to Ravi’s comments about Jason Bell, especially Sal’s belief that Andie may have run away to punish someone and that Andie’s relationship with her father was strained. Pip confirms that Jason and Dawn Bell divorced soon after Andie’s death certificate was issued, and that Jason later moved nearby and appears to have remarried a younger blonde woman.
While watching old press conference footage from the days after Andie disappeared, Pip becomes unsettled by Jason’s behavior. Pip notices Jason controlling Dawn physically and verbally, appearing to force emotion in public statements, and making Becca seem frightened under Jason’s gaze.
Pip identifies what she considers a major clue: at a press conference on Monday 23 April, before Sal’s alleged confession and death, Jason refers to Andie in the past tense by saying she “was such a huge presence” in their home. Because the public still believed Andie might be alive, Pip wonders whether this was an innocent mistake or evidence that Jason already knew Andie was dead.
Pip considers Jason and Dawn’s reported dinner-party alibi on the night Andie disappeared, but decides an alibi would not necessarily rule out Jason’s involvement. Pip formally begins a persons of interest list and makes Jason Bell the first name on it.
