Overview
Pip returns to Ravi Singh’s house and proves that Pip’s investigation into Sal Singh is not a prank. Ravi cautiously lets Pip in, and their awkward meeting becomes more human as Ravi reveals how painful it is for Ravi’s family to be denied the right to grieve Sal.
The chapter shifts Ravi from a suspicious outsider to a potential ally, while giving Pip a more intimate understanding of the emotional cost of the town’s certainty about Sal’s guilt. Pip ends the chapter prepared to record Ravi’s account and begin a serious interview.
Summary
Pip Fitz-Amobi returns to the Singh house on Friday as Ravi Singh had suggested, but she is anxious at the front door and nearly leaves when no one answers. Ravi opens the door just as Pip turns away, confused because Ravi assumed Pip’s earlier interest was a prank rather than a serious visit.
Pip insists Pip is sincere and offers Ravi homemade muffins as a friendly gesture. Ravi is cautious but eventually lets Pip inside, and Pip notices how difficult life in Little Kilton must be for Ravi, whose face reminds the town of Sal Singh.
In the kitchen, Ravi makes tea while the two make awkward but gentle conversation. Ravi explains that Ravi’s parents are not home and that Pip would not be allowed in if they were, because talking about Sal still upsets the family.
Ravi says the worst part is not only that Sal is gone, but that the family is not permitted to grieve him openly because the town believes Sal murdered Andie Bell. Pip offers quiet sympathy, and Ravi suggests that few people would agree with Pip’s lack of judgment.
After a brief moment of humor over Pip burning her tongue on the tea, Pip asks Ravi for permission to record their conversation so Pip can type it up accurately later. Ravi agrees, and Pip takes out her prepared questions, making clear that Pip is organized, serious, and ready to begin the interview.
