Overview
Pip’s recorded interview with Ravi deepens the case against the official story by showing Sal as worried, helpful, and repeatedly trying to contact Andie after her disappearance. Ravi also confirms damaging facts, including Sal’s false alibi and confession text, but frames them as panic or mystery rather than proof of murder.
The chapter shifts Pip’s investigation from academic interest to personal conviction. Pip reveals that Sal once protected and encouraged her, making her determination to clear him emotionally rooted as well as evidential.
Summary
Pip records a formal interview with Ravi Singh about Sal Singh’s behavior around Andie Bell’s disappearance. Ravi says Sal seemed cheerful at dinner on Friday 20 April 2012 and was still in a good mood the next morning until a call from one of Andie’s friends revealed Andie was missing. Ravi also confirms that Sal missed late-night calls from Andie’s friend because Sal’s phone was on silent.
Ravi explains that Sal repeatedly called Andie throughout the weekend and into Monday, which Pip notes seems inconsistent with Sal knowing Andie was dead or hiding Andie’s phone. Ravi says Sal stayed home on Saturday instead of going to Andie’s house and wondered whether Andie might have run off deliberately to punish someone, possibly her father, Jason Bell, because Ravi had overheard signs of tension between Andie and Jason.
The police contacted Sal on Saturday afternoon and recorded an interview about Sal’s whereabouts and relationship with Andie. Ravi says Sal liked Andie but that Andie brought drama. Afterward, Sal’s friends came over, and Ravi believes that was when Sal asked them to lie and provide an alibi. Ravi cannot explain why Sal lied except that Sal may have panicked because he had no one to confirm where he was between leaving Max’s and arriving home.
Ravi recounts the following days: Sal helped put up missing posters on Sunday, was quiet and worried on Monday, and on Tuesday walked to school with Ravi before staying behind in the car park. That was the last time Ravi saw Sal. Later, Ravi’s parents told Ravi that police needed to speak with Sal, officers had searched Sal’s bedroom, Sal was not answering calls, and Sal had sent his father a text saying, “it was me. I did it. I’m so sorry.” Police later came to say they had found Sal’s body in the woods.
Ravi says the sleeping pills Sal used belonged to Ravi’s father, who later blamed himself and stopped taking them. Ravi insists Sal had never seemed suicidal and describes him as happy, kind, talented, and a beloved older brother. Ravi cannot believe Sal killed Andie, though Ravi admits the evidence looks bad.
After the interview, Ravi asks why Pip cares enough to investigate. Pip explains that she knew Sal through Cara and Naomi Ward, and Ravi reveals that Naomi had seemed in love with Sal. Pip then shares memories of Sal’s kindness, including teaching her small things and defending her from racist bullying because her father is Nigerian. Pip admits Sal has always been a hero to her, which is why she cannot believe Sal was a murderer.
