Overview
Pip’s investigation turns inward toward the Ward household after the threatening note makes her suspect that someone close to Cara may be involved. Keeping the warning secret from everyone, including Ravi, Pip covertly changes the Ward family printer settings to catch any future printed threats.
The chapter raises the emotional stakes by forcing Pip to deceive Cara and reconsider Naomi as a possible suspect, complicating Pip’s trust in one of her closest families.
Summary
After school, Pip visits Cara at the Ward house and sits with her in the kitchen while they pretend to do homework. Cara worries about university choices, while Pip feels unusually anxious because she is keeping secrets from her best friend, including the threatening note found in the sleeping bag.
Ravi texts Pip asking for updates, and Cara teases Pip about their contact. When Cara asks whether there is anything new in the Andie Bell case, Pip lies and says there is not. Pip reflects that Ant and Connor still deny writing the note, and she has chosen not to tell anyone about it because concern from others might shut down her investigation.
Pip focuses on a new possibility: the note may have come from someone connected to the case. Because Naomi knew where Pip and Cara were camping, Pip reconsiders Naomi as a suspect despite Pip’s affection for the Wards. Pip thinks Naomi could be hiding unknown truths about leaving Max’s house, loving Sal, or hating Andie.
With Elliot out tutoring and Naomi watching television in another room, Pip asks to borrow Cara’s laptop. Pretending to look up a book for English, Pip secretly opens the Ward family printer settings. After researching printer records the previous night, Pip enables the option to keep printed documents so that, if another note appears, Pip can determine whether it came from the Ward printer.
Naomi enters the kitchen to get a drink, startling Pip after the secret act is complete. Cara complains about Naomi’s loud television, while Naomi notices Pip staring and asks if Pip is all right. Pip covers her nerves with a strained smile, claiming Naomi only made Pip jump.
