Overview

Pip confirms that the girl Elliot kept in the loft is not Andie Bell, shifting the case from a solved disappearance back into uncertainty. Elliot is arrested, and Pip tells Ravi that Sal was murdered and framed, giving Ravi the truth and the promise of his brother’s restored innocence.

The rescued girl’s existence exposes Elliot’s delusion or fear, while Andie’s real fate remains unanswered. The chapter ends with the Bell family reacting to the news, and Becca’s fearful recognition of Pip hints that more remains hidden.

Summary

Pip studies the girl in the loft more closely and sees that the differences from Andie Bell are unmistakable. Though the girl resembles Andie, Pip knows Andie’s face too well from months of investigation and realizes the captive is not her.

Outside 42 Mill End Road, police secure the scene as DI Richard Hawkins enters the house. Pip gives a statement while Elliot Ward is led away in handcuffs, crying. Pip wonders whether Elliot truly believed the girl was Andie and whether that belief was bound up in guilt over Sal Singh and fear of being exposed.

Ravi arrives after tracking Pip through Find My Friends when she failed to meet him. Pip explains that she came alone because she needed answers, then tells Ravi the full truth about Sal’s death: Sal was murdered and framed by Elliot. Ravi breaks down, but he also recognizes that Sal’s innocence will finally be known.

DI Hawkins escorts the rescued girl out wrapped in a blanket. Pip and Ravi discuss why Elliot might have mistaken her for Andie, concluding that fear and denial may have made him see what he needed to see. Pip privately recognizes that the central mystery remains unresolved: what really happened to the real Andie after she left the Wards’ house that night.

Pip drives Ravi home because he is shaking and because Pip does not want to be alone. On the way, they pass the Bell family’s car at a roundabout. Jason is angry and crying, Dawn is devastated, and Becca looks stunned; when Becca sees Pip, her expression carries recognition and dread. Pip assumes the Bells have just been told that the rescued girl claims to be Andie and may be going to confirm she is not.
