Overview
Pip’s casual supermarket trip exposes the social hostility Ravi still faces because of his connection to Sal. When Pip defends Ravi against a cashier’s prejudice, the confrontation damages rather than strengthens their fragile partnership.
Ravi’s reaction reveals how carefully he has learned to manage public judgment, while Pip begins to understand that righteous anger can have consequences for the person she means to protect.
Summary
Pip shops with her mother, Leanne, at Little Kilton’s small supermarket. Their ordinary joking over Victor’s messy shopping list is interrupted when Pip notices Ravi Singh in the aisle, buying emergency milk.
Pip introduces Ravi to Leanne, who remembers selling Ravi’s parents their house years ago and embarrasses Ravi by recalling his childhood Pikachu onesie with a tutu. The exchange is friendly, and Ravi joins them at the till after Leanne lets him go ahead.
At checkout, the cashier, Leslie, reacts to Ravi with open disgust. Leslie stares at Ravi coldly, refuses to take money directly from his hand, and says she does not want Ravi touching her. Ravi looks down and tries to avoid confrontation, but Pip recognizes that Ravi has noticed the hostility.
Pip’s anger erupts, and Pip publicly challenges Leslie, insults her, and threatens to complain to the store’s head office. Ravi quietly leaves with the milk while Pip continues the confrontation, and Leanne steps in to calm the scene.
Outside, Pip runs after Ravi and asks if Ravi is all right. Ravi snaps that Pip should not fight his battles, calls Pip a kid he barely knows, and warns that making Ravi her problem will only make things worse. Ravi walks away, leaving Pip shaken and emptied after her anger fades.
