Production Log – Entry 2

Overview

Pip reconstructs the official timeline of Andie Bell’s disappearance and the evidence that led police and the town to blame Sal Singh. The chapter shows how Sal’s friends’ changed alibi, Sal’s suicide, and forensic evidence ended the investigation without a trial or defence.

By emphasizing the gaps, assumptions, and lack of legal conviction, Pip sharpens the central tension of her project: Little Kilton accepts Sal’s guilt, but she believes the case may not be settled.

Summary

Pip uses her second EPQ production log to reconstruct the official timeline of the Andie Bell case from reports, records, social media, and local knowledge. She notes that the early picture is incomplete and plans to use later interviews with Ravi Singh and Naomi Ward to fill gaps. Based on Angela Johnson’s explanation, Pip assumes police took statements from Andie’s family, searched the Bell home, and then sought details about Andie’s friends, including Chloe Burch and Emma Hutton.

Pip traces the first weekend after Andie disappeared. Police questioned Andie’s boyfriend, Sal Singh, about his whereabouts on the Friday night. Sal said he had been at Max Hastings’ house with Naomi Ward, Jake Lawrence, Millie Simpson, and Max, leaving around 12:15 a.m.; his father, Mohan Singh, confirmed Sal arrived home around 12:50 a.m. Police initially confirmed that alibi with Sal’s friends while missing posters, house-to-house enquiries, volunteer searches, and forensic activity at the Bell residence followed.

The case shifted on Tuesday when Naomi, Max, Jake, and Millie contacted police from school and admitted they had lied. They said Sal had asked them to cover for him and that Sal had actually left Max’s house around 10:30 p.m., making Sal the likely prime suspect. Police could not find Sal at school or home, and it later emerged that Sal had sent his father a text that the press called a confession.

That evening, a search team found Sal dead in the woods. Pip records the rumored method of suicide and notes that police did not mention Sal at that night’s press conference, instead revealing CCTV evidence that Andie drove away from home at 10:40 p.m. The next day, Andie’s abandoned car was found on Romer Close, and the following Monday police publicly named Sal as the person they had strong reason to suspect in Andie’s abduction and murder.

Pip lists the evidence police said would have been enough to charge Sal: Andie’s phone was found on Sal’s body, Andie’s blood was found under two of Sal’s fingernails, Andie’s blood was found in the boot of her car, and Sal’s fingerprints were found in the car along with prints from Andie and her family. Because Sal was dead, there was no arrest, trial, conviction, or defence, and Andie’s body was never found despite further searches with cadaver dogs and divers.

Pip then explains the administrative closure of the case and the later inquest. In January 2014, with no body recovered, the coroner returned an unlawful killing verdict and Andie was legally declared dead. Pip concludes that the town treats Sal’s guilt as fact despite the absence of a trial, while she remains unconvinced and plans to examine what the prosecution’s case would have looked like.
