Overview

The campout turns frightening when Pip’s friends chase a hooded figure watching them from the woods and become briefly lost in the dark. After they return to the marquee, Pip finds a printed warning hidden in her sleeping bag telling her to stop investigating.

The note changes the stakes of Pip’s project: someone appears to know what she is doing, knows where she is, and wants to intimidate her. Pip cannot tell whether it is a prank or a real threat, but the fear suggests the investigation is reaching dangerous territory.

Summary

After Pip spots someone watching the campout from the woods, Connor grabs a torch and charges into the darkness. Pip follows him, with Ant close behind, and the group becomes separated in the trees. Connor admits he only saw a dark hood and lost the figure after the person ducked away.

Pip scolds Connor for running after the watcher alone, but the argument is interrupted by a scream. Zach, Pip, Connor, and Ant race back and find Cara and Lauren lost, drunk, frightened, and with a smashed torch. Pip calms everyone, reassures them that they are safer together, and leads the group back toward the marquee.

The friends take about fifteen minutes to find the camp again, even using Zach’s map app to orient themselves. Once inside the marquee, they clean up, close the canvas sides, and try to settle down. The boys begin joking, but Lauren remains upset, so Pip moves Lauren’s sleeping bag between Pip and Cara and helps both girls calm down.

When Pip finally gets into her own sleeping bag, she feels paper against her foot and finds a folded sheet printed with the warning: Stop digging, Pippa. Pip immediately suspects Ant and Connor of staging a cruel prank, possibly with the watcher in the woods, but both boys deny knowing anything about it.

Pip returns to bed angry, then becomes increasingly afraid as everyone else falls asleep. The note forces her to question whether the figure in the woods was connected to her investigation, turning the case from a school project into a direct threat against her.
