Overview

Pip completes her exam, retrieves the phone she planted in Elliot Ward's car, and confirms through Cara that Elliot no longer owns the Wards' old house on Mill End Road. This strengthens Pip's suspicion that Elliot has been lying for years and may be connected to whatever is hidden near Wendover.

During Elliot's history lesson, the word "diaries" sparks a sudden realization, sending Pip running from school to act on the clue. The chapter shifts Pip from waiting and watching to urgently pursuing a new lead.

Summary

Pip sits her exam alone in a classroom, trying to ignore the ticking clock and focus on texts about guilt. She finishes with time to spare and feels she has done reasonably well after finally getting almost seven hours of sleep.

After the exam, Cara finds Pip and returns Pip's phone, saying it had been wedged under the back seat of Elliot Ward's car. Pip pretends not to know how that happened, then casually asks about Mill End Road in Wendover. Cara confirms the Wards used to live at number forty-two, but says Elliot sold the house a couple of years after Cara's mother died.

Cara's answer confirms to Pip that Elliot has been lying for years about his connection to the old house. Pip struggles through lunch with Cara, feeling grief and dread for her friend because the investigation now points more strongly toward Cara's father.

In history class, Pip avoids looking at Elliot and sits at the back. Elliot mentions the diaries of Stalin's doctor during the lesson, and the word "diaries" suddenly triggers a realization in Pip.

When Elliot stops Pip after class to ask about her exam, Pip keeps calm and leaves. Once out of Elliot's sight, Pip drops her fake limp, skips politics, and runs to her car, driven by the new clue about diaries.
