Overview

Naomi and Max confess that Sal’s friends lied about his alibi because an unknown blackmailer threatened to expose their involvement in a past drunk hit-and-run. Naomi’s account confirms Sal was still at Max’s house after midnight and had planned to break up with Andie, making the official murder narrative collapse.

Pip realizes Sal was framed and likely murdered by the same person who killed Andie, but Cara’s plea forces her into a painful compromise. Pip decides not to give the incriminating photo to police and instead commits to clearing Sal by finding the real killer.

Summary

After Pip presses Naomi for the truth, Naomi admits that she, Max, Jake, and Millie lied about Sal because an unknown person threatened them. On the Monday after Andie disappeared, they received texts ordering them to delete every photo proving Sal was at Max’s house and to tell the police Sal left at 10:30 and had asked them to lie for him.

Naomi and Max reveal the secret used to blackmail them: on New Year’s Eve 2011, Max drove drunk with Naomi, Jake, and Millie in the car and hit a man on the A413. Believing the man was dead and fearing criminal consequences, they left him, cleaned the car, and staged a crash near Max’s driveway. The man survived but was left paraplegic, and the group swore never to tell anyone.

Pip asks how anyone could have learned about the hit-and-run, but Naomi and Max both deny telling anyone. Pip then challenges Naomi about being missing for part of the night Andie disappeared, and Naomi says she was upstairs with Sal. Sal told Naomi that Andie treated people badly and that he had decided to end their relationship, seeming relieved by the decision.

Pip spells out the consequences: Sal was at Max’s until 12:15, someone blackmailed the group into destroying his alibi, and Sal was found dead after being made to look guilty. Pip concludes that Sal was innocent and that someone killed both Andie and Sal. Max denies killing Andie or knowing what happened to her, while Cara begs Pip not to take the photo to the police because Naomi could be taken away too.

Pip chooses not to go to the police with the photo, but only to protect Naomi and Cara, not Max. Pip tells Naomi that she will not cover up the truth about Sal and must find the real killer as the only way to clear Sal while protecting Naomi. Naomi, crushed by guilt, urges Pip to do so, and Pip feels the burden of the case grow heavier.
