Overview
Pip faces the emotional aftermath of exposing Elliot Ward, especially the pain of telling Cara that her father killed Sal and has been arrested. The Singh family visits to thank Pip and Ravi after the police confirm Sal’s innocence, bringing a moment of relief and healing after years of grief.
Although Pip remains troubled by the unanswered question of what happened to Andie Bell, Ravi helps her recognize that their investigation has fulfilled its purpose. The chapter marks a turning point from obsessive pursuit toward release, even as the larger mystery of Andie remains for the police.
Summary
After exposing Elliot Ward, Pip stays awake late into the night in her parents’ bedroom and tells her family what happened. The hardest part is informing Cara, because Pip knows the truth about Elliot will destroy her best friend’s life. Unable to make herself call, Pip sends Cara a message explaining that Elliot killed Sal Singh, kept a girl he believed was Andie Bell in the old Ward house, and has been arrested; Pip also promises Naomi will be safe.
Pip wakes the next afternoon and stays home from school while the unresolved question of Andie Bell continues to trouble her. Pip repeatedly calls Cara and Naomi, but neither answers. Leanne checks the Wards’ house and finds no one there, leading Pip to guess that Cara and Naomi may have gone to their aunt Lila’s.
That evening, Ravi arrives with his parents, Nisha and Mohan Singh. Ravi explains that the police have told the Singh family what Pip and Ravi already discovered: Elliot will be charged, a press conference will follow, and a statement will be released confirming Sal’s innocence. Nisha and Mohan thank Pip for helping return Sal’s name to them, bringing flowers and chocolates in gratitude.
The Singhs and Pip’s family share emotional hugs, and the visit lifts the heavy sadness in the house. For the first time, the chapter emphasizes that amid the damage Elliot caused, there is still one clear good outcome: Sal Singh has been vindicated, and his family can begin to live differently.
Over tea, the families discuss attending the town fireworks together, something the Singhs have avoided since Sal’s death. Pip withdraws to the kitchen, still preoccupied by Andie’s unresolved disappearance. Ravi follows and reminds Pip that they accomplished their original goal: proving Sal was innocent and identifying what happened to him. Pip admits she is exhausted and accepts that Andie’s reopened case now belongs to the police, not to her.
