Overview
After Barney’s burial, Pip’s grief hardens into a desperate decision to end the investigation in order to protect Ravi from the killer’s threats. Ravi visits to comfort her and offer more time, but Pip deliberately destroys their partnership by claiming she is done and that Sal’s alibi evidence is gone.
The confrontation leaves Ravi devastated and angry, while Pip privately accepts being hated if it keeps him safe. The chapter shifts the case from active pursuit to forced retreat, with Pip isolated by guilt, fear, and the consequences of the threat against her.
Summary
Barney is buried in the afternoon, and Pip and Josh plan to plant sunflowers over his grave in spring because they seem bright and happy like him. Cara and Lauren visit with cookies, but Pip is too overwhelmed by grief, guilt, and rage to speak much. By evening, Pip is alone in her room, unable to write and crushed by the secret that Barney died because of the investigation.
Ravi comes to Pip’s room after she does not answer his messages and he hears what happened from Pip’s father. He comforts Pip by explaining that he once blamed himself after Sal died, and he tells Pip she can take more time before they bring Sal’s alibi photo to the police. Ravi says he knows Sal was innocent now and can wait longer while Pip recovers.
Pip realizes that the killer has proved willing to harm and kill again, so Pip decides the only way to protect Ravi is to make Ravi give up on the case. Pip tells Ravi she is abandoning the project, has contacted her supervisor, and is finished with Andie Bell and Sal Singh. Ravi is confused and hurt, insisting they are close to the truth and that Pip cannot take away the chance she gave him to clear Sal.
Ravi then says he will go to the police alone with Sal’s alibi photo, but Pip tells him her laptop was stolen and then says she destroyed the printed photo. Ravi becomes furious and devastated, accusing Pip of becoming like the people in Kilton who condemned and tormented his family despite believing Sal was guilty. He tells Pip she is cruel, like Andie Bell, and leaves in tears.
After Ravi exits, Pip breaks down alone. Pip punches her desk and screams into her hands, accepting Ravi’s hatred as the price of keeping him safe from the person who killed Andie, framed Sal, and caused Barney’s death.
