Overview
Pip interviews Naomi Ward about the night Andie disappeared and learns more about Sal’s early departure, his disagreement with Andie, and the false alibi his friends originally gave police. Naomi’s account supports the idea that Sal panicked because he expected to be blamed, but it also leaves a major gap: Naomi cannot say where Sal was after leaving Max’s.
The chapter deepens Pip’s doubts about the official case while showing the emotional damage still surrounding Sal and Andie’s deaths. It also moves Pip’s investigation forward by pointing her toward Max Hastings, the only one of Sal’s friends from that night who is currently available in Kilton.
Summary
Pip interviews Naomi Ward in Elliot Ward’s study, aware that Naomi is anxious and fragile after her mother’s death and a recent panic attack that led her to quit her London job. Pip tries to keep the tone gentle while recording, but the atmosphere feels tense and Naomi avoids eye contact, focusing instead on her late mother’s paintings.
Naomi describes the night at Max Hastings’s house: the group drank, talked, played Xbox, and later took silly photos. Sal Singh left before the photos were taken, at about 10:30 p.m., saying he was not feeling it and wanted to walk home early. Naomi says Sal did not seem strange, though he had mentioned a disagreement with Andie Bell and often avoided arguing with Andie by giving her the silent treatment.
After a brief interruption from Cara, Pip asks when Naomi first heard Andie was missing. Naomi says Sal texted her late Saturday morning, and Naomi initially assumed Andie might be with other friends and deliberately unreachable. Pip then carefully asks about Sal’s request for a false alibi, and Naomi explains that Sal feared the police would focus on him because he was Andie’s boyfriend, so he asked the group to say he had left Max’s at about 12:15 a.m. instead of 10:30 p.m.
Naomi says the lie did not seem wrong at the time because Naomi believed Sal was only trying to stop police wasting time and help find Andie faster. Naomi cannot clearly remember whether Sal explained where he had really been between 10:30 p.m. and 12:50 a.m. The group later discussed the lie on Monday night and agreed to tell police the truth on Tuesday because they feared getting into trouble and did not believe Sal was involved.
When Pip asks directly whether Naomi thinks Sal killed Andie, Naomi says she does not want to believe it because Sal was kind, funny, and good to Andie. After ending the recording, Pip asks about the others from Max’s house that night; Naomi says Millie is travelling in Australia, Jake lives in Devon with his girlfriend and baby, and Max is back in Kilton. Naomi offers Pip Max’s number, and Pip and Naomi join Cara and Elliot in the kitchen as Elliot returns and makes tea.
