Overview

Pip learns that Naomi’s temporary SIM card belonged to Elliot Ward, meaning the phone number in Andie Bell’s planner may point to him rather than Naomi. Acting on that suspicion, Pip secretly checks the Ward family printer history and finds that Elliot’s computer printed the warning note left in her locker.

The chapter marks a major shift in the investigation: a trusted adult and Cara’s father is now tied to both Andie and the threats against Pip. Pip’s private discovery raises the stakes emotionally and practically, because pursuing the truth now means suspecting someone inside her closest friend’s home.

Summary

At the Ward house, Pip, Cara, and Naomi carve pumpkins after school. Pip is tense because Naomi prepared the activity before Pip could sneak away to check the printer, but Pip uses conversation about Naomi’s broken phone to ask about the temporary number Naomi has been using.

Naomi explains that the SIM card is not hers after all: Cara found it in Elliot Ward’s desk, among old household odds and ends. Pip immediately connects Elliot’s old number to the number scribbled in Andie Bell’s planner, and to Andie once calling Mr Ward an arsehole before her disappearance. The possibility that Elliot, rather than Naomi, was connected to Andie makes Pip feel sick, though Pip reminds herself that the phone number alone is not proof.

Because Pip needs evidence, Pip invents a reason to fetch Cara’s laptop for Halloween music. Pip takes the laptop, slips into Elliot’s study, and opens the printer queue for the household printer.

Pip searches the print history for the day before the warning note was placed in Pip’s locker. The log shows that late on 19 October, Elliot’s computer printed an unnamed Microsoft Word document. Pip restarts that print job from the queue.

The printer produces the document, and Pip reads the page. It is the exact threat note: “This is your final warning, Pippa. Walk away.” The discovery directly links Elliot Ward to the intimidation against Pip and makes him a serious suspect in Andie and Sal’s case.
