Overview

Pip questions Becca Bell at the Kilton Mail and reveals that Andie may have been dealing drugs with a hidden burner phone. Becca refuses to believe this, but her answers expose a major new lead: Daniel da Silva was close to Jason Bell and may have searched Andie’s room as one of the first responding officers.

The chapter shifts suspicion toward Daniel by giving him both access and a possible opportunity to remove evidence. Pip also openly tells Becca that she doubts Sal’s guilt, drawing Becca further into the possibility that the accepted version of Andie’s murder is wrong.

Summary

Pip visits the Kilton Mail office on a Monday morning to question Becca Bell. The building feels empty, and Stanley Forbes briefly appears on his way out, directing Pip to the back room where the staff are working because the front room has no heat.

In the back office, Pip finds Becca writing her first newspaper article about an abandoned farmhouse near Sycamore Road. Becca explains that the house matters to her because her father once considered buying and restoring it before Andie disappeared, revealing how closely Becca still connects present events to her family’s past.

Becca reluctantly agrees to speak with Pip privately in the cold front room. Pip tells Becca that Andie was likely dealing drugs at calamity parties and had a burner phone hidden with her stash. Becca rejects this, insisting that Andie could not have been selling drugs, but Pip presses on because the missing phone may identify who accessed Andie’s room after she vanished.

Pip asks whether anyone could have entered the Bell house before the police arrived, then pivots to possible suspects. Becca says she never saw Max Hastings near the house, but she knows Daniel da Silva because he was close to her father. Daniel once worked for Jason Bell’s cleaning company after leaving his school caretaker job, was promoted to an office role, and was encouraged by Jason to become a police officer.

This connection becomes crucial when Becca reveals that Daniel was one of the first responding officers after Jason reported Andie missing. Daniel and a policewoman took statements and conducted the initial search of the house, meaning Daniel may have been the first person to search Andie’s room. Pip realizes Daniel could have found and removed the burner phone before anyone else knew it existed, then tells Becca she no longer believes Sal killed Andie and thinks she is close to proving it.
