Overview

Pip's interview with Chloe reveals that Andie had unexplained money, controlled her friends through secrets, and may have been involved with someone other than Sal. After Chloe shuts down questions about Andie's father, Pip crosses an ethical line by pretending to be Chloe in order to get information from Emma.

The deception pays off with two major revelations: Jason Bell was having an affair that Andie knew about, and Andie was secretly seeing an older man she claimed she could ruin. These discoveries make Jason a leading suspect and introduce a new possible motive for Andie's murder.

Summary

Pip first tries to follow Sal's note about the car registration R009 KKJ, but Ravi's warning proves correct: without the car's make and model, she cannot request the owner's details from the DVLA, so that lead stalls.

Pip then interviews Chloe Burch by phone, changing tactics to avoid repeating Emma's answers. Chloe describes Sal as calm and kind to Andie, but says he did not mellow Andie out. Chloe also reveals that Andie and Sal were not sleeping together, though Andie was not a virgin, and that Andie kept secrets because secrecy made her feel powerful.

Chloe says Andie often had unexplained cash, shopped frequently, talked about saving for cosmetic procedures, and used gifts or borrowed clothes to control and belittle her friends. When Pip asks whether Andie might have run away to punish her father, Chloe becomes defensive and shuts down the interview, insisting Sal killed Andie and that Andie was impossible to truly know.

After rereading the transcript, Pip notices that her phrasing may have implied Andie was sleeping with someone else during her relationship with Sal, and Chloe did not correct the assumption. Pip wonders whether this could explain Sal and Andie's argument and Sal's final text telling Andie he would not speak to her until she had stopped.

Because Andie's friends will not freely share their deepest secrets with Pip, Pip decides to use an immoral tactic: she texts Emma while pretending to be Chloe using an old SIM card. The deception succeeds and produces two major leads. Pip learns Jason Bell was having an affair, Andie knew about it, and Jason knew that Andie knew, making him a much stronger suspect.

Pip also learns that Andie was secretly seeing an older man while dating Sal, and that Andie claimed she could ruin him. Pip considers whether the older man or Jason could be connected to Andie's secret money, though she recognizes this remains conjecture. The investigation shifts as Pip begins to see the public image of Andie as a perfect victim peeling away.
