Overview
Pip absorbs the implication of the warning note and concludes that Elliot Ward is Unknown, the person behind Andie’s death, Sal’s framing, and Barney’s murder. The revelation is especially painful because Elliot has been a beloved father figure to Pip and a central part of Cara’s family life.
Pip hides the evidence, lies to Cara and Naomi, and probes Elliot’s tutoring timeline, learning it began around the time of Andie and Sal’s deaths. The chapter ends with Elliot arriving home warmly and casually, intensifying the danger because Pip must conceal her knowledge in his presence.
Summary
Pip freezes after seeing the reprinted warning note and understands what it means: Elliot Ward is Unknown. In her shock, Pip concludes that Elliot is responsible for Andie Bell’s death, Sal Singh’s framing and death, and Barney’s murder.
The discovery devastates Pip because Elliot has been a trusted, fatherly figure throughout her childhood. Pip thinks back to Elliot’s kindness, family routines, jokes, gifts, and comforting gestures, and now sees them as part of a terrifying deception.
When Cara calls for Pip, Pip folds the incriminating page and hides it in her blazer pocket before returning to the kitchen. Pip lies that she has been in the toilet, sets Cara’s laptop down, and says she feels unwell and needs to study, using that excuse to leave.
Before going, Pip tries to gather more information without alarming Cara or Naomi. Pip asks where Elliot is, then casually questions why Elliot tutors and when he began, learning from Naomi that he started just over five years earlier, shortly before Naomi left for university.
Naomi notices Elliot’s car pulling up, and Pip becomes physically tense. Elliot enters moments later, cheerful and ordinary, claiming he was delayed by a long teachers’ meeting and offering Halloween potato shapes, forcing Pip to face the man she now believes is the killer while Cara and Naomi remain unaware.
